Tidy Towns
"MAKE ROSSLARE A BETTER PLACE"
The slogan incorporates all the desires and ambition of the committee, of course we all think that we are brilliant but you only know your true value when somebody else tells you. Especialy if that someone is a Tidy Towns Judge. Rosslare have beens entering the competition for many years now and have recieved many awards over the years but the goal of winning the county award still eludes us but we have high hopes that 2009 may see a change in our fortunes. If we are to succeede then we must all pull together where there are weeds get rid of them, if it looks tired and flaky paint it, if you see litter pick it up,trim the hedges and cut the grass and be proud of where you live. But most of all never be afraid to encourage others to do likewise.

Overall Development Approach:
Welcome to the 2009 National TidyTowns Competition. Thank you for your submission, which included a completed application form and your wonderfully illustrated report outlining the full range of your committee’s activities. Your all embracing PR efforts to drum up support amongst the wider community for TidyTowns makes impressive reading and it is good to hear that residents feel the village has benefited and has increased sense of pride in the community. Perhaps the committee will acquaint us in time of the benefits of the establishment of your TidyTowns website. Your report outlined a vast number of projects which were widely dispersed throughout the village. This adjudicator ensured that each individual project was visited.
The Built Environment:
The village core is an attractive area close by an important access point to the beach. This area was bustling with activity on the day of adjudication and the local businesses were individually busy. A number of local commercial premises in this area are well presented and portray a nice mixture of colour and signage. Brady’s corner building has particularly nice details and the shop-front and lettering was admired here. It would be impossible to individually mention each premises but the following were particularly noted: The Pepper Mill; DAI Boutique; Petit Plaisir; Blondie’s and The French Connection. Further along Kelly’s Hotel looks exceptional. Landscaping here, particularly along the street front, is of the highest quality and the wonderful mix of trees, shrubs, plants and flowers forms a most attractive threshold along the streetscape to the entrance to the building. The pergola at the Bar and Bistro has an inviting charm. The Church and its grounds make a magnificent presentation.
Landscaping:
On arrival at Rosslare the tone for the high standard of landscaping is set by the magnificent ornate display at the roundabout and its surrounding environs. Further evidence of the committee’s hard work and their effective mobilisation of the wider community, is also to be seen in the huge number of hanging baskets, planted tubs, window boxes and flower beds throughout the village, which hugely enhances the attractive seaside setting. The oak tree planting in honour of Margaret Ainge was a nice gesture from the community. The replanting at the RNLI site and St. Brigid’s Well were noted. The clustering of the schools and community sports centre adjacent to each other makes an interesting complex. The
Wildlife and Natural Amenities:
The Bird Hide is a lovely feature and certainly has the effect of animating this interesting activity. The
adjudicator notes that you are in discussion with the Wildlife Ranger with a view to increasing bird boxes and bat boxes in this area and certainly your suggestion of a wildlife interpretative centre at the sports area would in time prove a wonderful wet weather facility.
Waste Minimisation:
The adjudicator notes that you have an ongoing problem with illegal dumping and a visit to the sports grounds showed that the receptacles were full to capacity. In fact one receptacle had begun to overflow and the cover could not be closed. Your plans for expansion under this heading are noted.
Tidiness:
The adjudicator notes that you are continuing to make progress under this heading. The overall impression is certainly one of tidiness. The tennis court netting, to the boundary wall close by the attractively presented
Residential Areas:
Many new housing schemes have been developed in Rosslare and broadly they are at various stages of
maturity. A high standard of presentation has been set by a number of more established schemes. Clon Main is a wonderfully landscaped scheme and continues the high presentation at the roundabout into the scheme itself. Commodore Barry Park presents an attractive linear green space. The built stone walls surrounding the shrubberies here are a feature and the stone boundary wall along the public road footpath gives the overall scheme a pleasant uniformity. Perhaps the committee would now consider carrying out an inventory of the newer schemes with a view to forming new contacts and this in turn would be of assistance in achieving your programme. Elsewhere, many individual private residences and gardens were well presented and, on

General Impression:
Certainly on the day of adjudication the busy
