MORE THAN 60 shivering swimmers braved the freezing waters of Rosslare Bay on Christmas day, to raise money for two worthy causes.

The Rosslare Strand swim was in aid of Tagoat Day Care Centre and the Coronary Care unit of Wexford General Hospital.

Among those who took the icy plunge at midday was a young man who is accustomed to warmer water - Gordon Becker from Perth, Australia who was staying with his aunt Mary Murphy and her family in Kilrane.

Men, women and children of all ages (but mostly men) took part in the swim with one woman in her 70's included. Most people had a quick dip before running for the towels but a few hardy swimmers stayed in longer.

There was steaming mulled wine and hot mince pies waiting for the participants when they emerged from the water.

The annual event which was attended by about 300 well-wrapped supporters, was organised by Willie Ennis, Michael Healy and Ray Flynn.
